Bailiffscourt Hotel - West Sussex (Big-dog-friendly series)
Updated: Feb 4
This is the first episode to our big-dog-friendly series where we aim to visit and review restaurants, hotels and locations that are suitable for larger dogs. There have been SO many occasions we've been told places we want to visit are 'dog-friendly' however, when we arrive, we have been turned away due to Zeus' size! We hope to be able to help others that may run into the same problem as us. Now... onto the review!
Bailiffscourt hotel and spa is a beautiful hotel in Climping, nestled on the coast in West Sussex. It's part of the Historical Sussex Hotel group and boasts 39 rooms - a mixture of charming houses, cottages and an award-winning spa. It's situated in 30-acres of land and is a short woodland walk to Climping beach.
Hotel address: Climping, West Sussex, BN17 5RW
We had a car so it took us approx 2 hours to drive there from Central London. The drive was a pleasant one with lots of fun country roads and quaint country cottages on our journey. It made it an interesting drive and Zeus had lots of sheep to watch out of his window.
You can also reach the hotel by train. The closest station is Barnham which is a direct train from Victoria Station and will take approx 1 hour 30 minutes. From Barnham station, you can then take a short 10 minute cab to the hotel. Super convenient as a weekend getaway from the city.
Once we arrived at the hotel we were immediately struck by the beautiful old buildings. It had so much character and was very different from anywhere we've stayed before. As soon as we entered the hotel, we were greeted by friendly faces that were ecstatic to meet Zeus. He was also very excited in return! They supplied him with some treats that they had hidden behind the reception desk and made us feel very welcome. We were worried about the London traffic so we set off early. That meant we ended up arriving at Bailiffscourt ahead of schedule (around noon) but our room was already ready and they let us have our room almost 3 hours ahead of time!
Bailiffscourt hotel has 39 rooms of varying sizes and we were lucky enough to be given one of the larger rooms. A member of staff had mentioned that it was good we had got one of the larger rooms as she wasn't sure Zeus would fit in the small options. So keep this in mind if you have a bigger dog or multiple dogs. According to their website, you can have up to two dogs per room at the cost of £25 per dog. We stayed in one of their 'four-poster feature' rooms and it was BEAUTIFUL. With amazing features such as the four-poster bed, high vaulted ceilings and a huge open fireplace. In comparison to our small London flat, this was a dream. We also got to test out the roll-top bathtub :). Zeus had plenty of space to move around and we were even able to roll out his travel bed so he could nap by the fire.
Though he did prefer to be on the luxurious bed! It had all the usual amenities, bathrobes, hairdryer, bathroom supplies etc and even some delicious homemade shortbread.
As we had Zeus with us, we were unable to dine in their main dining room (tapestry room) but they set us up in one of their comfy lounges. They did say we were allowed to leave Zeus in our room while we dined, but where would be the fun in that!? Instead, we had the big boy drooling at us while we had our 3 course meal. Our package (details below) included the meal but we opted to pay a little extra to upgrade to the 'Sussex' Menu. Our top picks from the menu were the 'Climping beach' (crab mayo, poached lobster, brown shrimp and hot butter glazed oyster) and the hot pistachio soufflé with coffee and vanilla custard. I'm drooling thinking about it now!
As for breakfast the next morning, we opted for a full-English but also had the option to pick from the continental buffet.
Things to do
All guests get full access to their award winning spa facilities which include an indoor and outdoor pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. A really great way to relax and unwind. They also have a huge list of treatments and spa packages you can purchase if you really want to treat yourself. :) The spa is not dog friendly so we just had a quick dip in the pool and headed to the beach.
Climping beach is a short 10 minute walk away and can be accessed by private woodlands. If it's forecasted to rain during your stay then i'd recommend packing some wellies as it can get quite muddy. Keep an eye out for their natural wildlife as well as the resident peacocks they have roaming the grounds! Once you come out of the woodlands you will be greeted with miles of pebbled beaches and perhaps a refreshing dip in the sea. It was a super windy and wet the day we visited but it didn't stop Zeus from trying to dive into the waves the first chance he got. It was really quiet and he had a blast doing zoomies along the shoreline.
9/10 for Bailiffscourt Hotel! I'd recommend to big-dog owners or dog owners in general looking for a nice quiet getaway that's within easy travel distance from London. There was plenty of space for larger dogs and plenty to do either on-site or in the nearby area. You're unlikely to get bored. My only reason for not giving 10/10 was because not all areas within the hotel were dog-friendly. Ultimately, Zeus had a great time and us humans also loved it. As Arnie once said..I'll (we'll) be back.
Pricing starts from £265 depending on the package you choose and dates.
They have a special 'Sandy Paws' Package which means you get:
An overnight stay in a dog-friendly room
A three-course meal (for humans)
